What Is Account Updater?

Account updater is a card-network service (Visa and Mastercard) that automatically refreshes stored card numbers and expiration dates so recurring charges don't fail on stale cards and turn into cancelled-recurring disputes.

‍Account updater is a card-network service that automatically sends updated card numbers, expiration dates, and account status to a merchant's payment processor. It runs when a customer's card expires, is reissued, or is replaced, and Visa and Mastercard operate the two main programs.

It refreshes card credentials only, so a decline from low funds, a network error, or a bank fraud hold stays declined. Customers can still dispute charges for reasons unrelated to card data.

Why account updater matters for chargeback risk

A recurring charge that fails on an expired card costs you more than the sale, because the same failure comes back weeks later as a dispute. The customer sees a billing gap, or a retry they don't recognize, and calls the bank. The bank writes it up under a cancelled-recurring or a no-authorization reason code.

Card networks judge the case on your records, and your records don't say why the charge failed. So the network treats a customer who quit and a card that went stale as the same thing.

You answer that dispute with no easy way to say the card on file was current.

In our own alert dataset, Visa reason code 13.2 accounts for roughly 8.5% of alerts with a recorded reason code. Only fraud, card-absent, ranks higher, at roughly 11.1%.

Mastercard reason code 4841 covers the same ground on its network.

Account updater prevents the stale-card disputes filed under that code, because the charge never fails in the first place. Genuine cancellations keep using it, so the code never drops to zero.

This only matters if you bill on a schedule or keep cards on file. At a one-time checkout the customer types in a live card every time, so nothing can go stale. Stored cards are where the risk sits, and where avoiding chargebacks in subscriptions starts.

How account updater works

Visa Account Updater and Mastercard's Automatic Billing Updater take card-change data from the issuing bank and pass it to enrolled processors. Your processor writes the new number into your stored card record before the next billing run, and you never contact the customer or the bank yourself.

You get no updates unless your processor has enrolled in the network's program. Stripe, Adyen, and Braintree all support it.

Ask yours whether they're enrolled in both programs, and whether updates hit your stored cards automatically or need a per-card API call. A processor that hasn't enrolled passes you nothing.

About 40% of cardholders replace their card in a given year through expiry, loss, or fraud. On a few thousand subscribers, that is hundreds of stored cards going stale every twelve months.

Coverage depends on the customer's issuing bank taking part, and plenty of banks don't, especially outside the US. Prepaid cards are left out of the programs completely.

Run your own numbers through our ROI calculator to see what stale cards are costing you.

Those cards still fail, and the dispute still follows, even with account updater turned on.

Account updater vs. chargeback alerts

Account updater stops a stale-card failure before you run the charge, while an Ethoca or Verifi chargeback alert reaches you after the customer disputes. Both cut your dispute exposure, at opposite ends of the same transaction.

An alert still leaves you time to refund before the chargeback goes through.

The timing gap is why account updater can't replace alerts.

Say you refresh a customer's card in January. In March that same customer sees your name on a statement and calls the bank.

An alert catches that call while you can still refund. It comes far too late to have saved the decline.

Run both and some disputes still get through, like real fraud and product complaints. The pair cuts your volume, and the rest lands anyway.

How we sourced our data

The percentages above come from anonymized, aggregated alert data across the merchants using Chargeback.io. We counted the alerts in each reason-code category and report each one as a share of that total. These numbers cover the alerts our own platform handled, so read them as our view of the market.

FAQ

Does account updater cover every card network equally?

No, coverage varies by network and by country, and your processor decides what you get. Stripe offers real-time Visa updates in the UK and Europe, and covers Mastercard globally.

Is account updater the same as network tokenization?

Account updater refreshes a stored card number after the bank changes it. Network tokenization replaces that number with a substitute value your systems hold instead, so many merchants run both.

Can a merchant turn account updater off?

Usually yes, since enrollment is a setting your processor controls rather than a network mandate. Turning it off means every reissued card in your vault stays stale until the customer updates it themselves.

Can you see which cards account updater refreshed?

Your processor decides, because the update happens in your payment stack rather than the networks' own reporting. Most processors log each refresh on the stored card, so check their dashboard or API records.
