Stripe Chargeback Fee: What It Costs and When to Fight It

The Stripe chargeback fee is $15 in the US regardless of outcome, $30 total if you fight and lose, and ranges up to roughly $55–$90 in other currencies, so fighting is only worth it above that cost with strong evidence.

The Stripe chargeback fee is $15 in the US, charged every time a customer disputes a charge, win or lose. Since June 17, 2025, Stripe charges a second $15 fee if you fight and lose, according to Stripe's fee page. A losing fight now costs $30.

I've run stores on Stripe where a bad month of disputes cost me more in fees than the orders were worth. Once I knew what each dispute would cost me before I clicked submit, I could pick which ones to fight.

Key takeaways

  • Stripe charges $15 per dispute in the US, win or lose.
  • Fight a dispute and lose, and Stripe charges $15 more.
  • Win the fight and Stripe refunds that second $15 in full.
  • Japan, Mexico, and Thailand have no dispute-countered fee.
  • In the US, fight only when the order beats $30 with strong evidence.
  • Refund an alert early and Stripe charges no $15 fee.

What is the Stripe chargeback fee?

The Stripe chargeback fee is a $15 charge in the US, applied every time a customer disputes a payment, win or lose. According to Stripe, it's billed the moment the dispute opens, separate from the disputed amount.

Stripe is passing on a cost it pays itself.

The card networks and issuing banks charge Stripe to handle every dispute, and Stripe's pricing passes that cost to you. That holds whichever way the dispute ends.

According to Stripe, the $15 figure is the US rate. The next section has the full table by currency.

Dispute fee vs. chargeback fee: same charge

"Dispute fee" and "chargeback fee" are two names for the same $15 charge, even though a dispute and a chargeback are different stages. Stripe's own documentation says dispute fee. Merchants say chargeback fee.

The stages differ even where the fee doesn't. A dispute is the cardholder questioning a charge with their bank, and a chargeback is the forced reversal that follows if the dispute stands. Our guide to dispute vs. chargeback walks through the full distinction.

Stripe bills the fee at the dispute stage, before anyone knows whether it turns into a chargeback.

What does a Stripe chargeback actually cost in 2026?

A US Stripe dispute costs $15 if you don't fight it, or $30 total if you fight it and lose. According to Stripe, that second $15 charge, the dispute-countered fee, started on June 17, 2025.

Stripe charges the dispute-received fee as soon as the customer opens the dispute, and it stays charged whatever you do next. You only pay the dispute-countered fee if you submit evidence and lose, and Stripe gives it back in full when you win.

Summary: A Stripe dispute costs $15 to lose quietly, $15 to win a fight, and $30 to lose one.

One merchant's numbers match. Chargeback.io's Dropship.io case study puts the per-dispute cost at $15, up to $30 with the dispute-countered fee.

The lost product and your staff's time come on top of that.

Stripe chargeback fees by country and currency

Your settlement currency sets your Stripe dispute fee, from $15 in USD up to roughly $55 to $90 in BRL, HKD, and MYR. According to Stripe's fee page, in almost every currency it lists, the countered fee matches the received fee.

Stripe's fee page lists no countered fee at all for Japan, Mexico, or Thailand.

Does Stripe Chargeback Protection cover the fee?

Stripe Chargeback Protection leaves the $15 dispute-received fee in place, though it can reimburse the disputed amount on eligible fraud disputes. According to Stripe, you still pay for the handling, even when the money comes back to you.

Stripe decides which accounts and integrations qualify, and the program covers only a set list of fraud dispute categories. Our Stripe Chargeback Protection guide lists the covered reason codes and the pricing.

Most merchants are surprised by what the program leaves out. Three common dispute types fall outside it:

  • Merchandise the customer says never arrived.
  • A service that missed its description.
  • A subscription the customer thought they cancelled.

On any of those, an enrolled merchant still pays the full loss plus the fee.

Is it worth fighting a Stripe chargeback?

Fight a US Stripe dispute when the order is worth more than $30 and your evidence is strong, and refund it when either test fails. Per Stripe's data, that's the worst case. On smaller orders, the fight usually costs you more than the order did.

Start with the money. Is the order worth more than the $30 a lost fight can cost you, per Stripe's data? We use the full $30 rather than the $15 you add by fighting, because losing also costs you the goods and your staff's time.

Then check the evidence. A real shot means delivery confirmation, a statement descriptor showing the brand the customer bought from, and no earlier disputes from this buyer.

Clear the money test first, or you'll spend good evidence on orders too small to defend. The two ends of that range look like this:

DisputeEvidenceYou riskYou recoverFight?
$20Thin$15 more$20No
$150Tracked delivery, clean history$15 more$150Yes

Merchants are usually right about the amount and wrong about their evidence. Our guide to building a strong dispute case shows what each reason code needs.

Summary: Check the order value against $30 first, then check your evidence.

Near a monitoring threshold, though, the math changes. Card networks count every filed dispute against your Stripe chargeback rate whether you win or lose. If you're close to a program limit, stopping disputes helps you more than winning them.

How to cut your Stripe chargeback fees

To pay nothing, stop the dispute before the customer files it, because a prevented dispute carries no fee.

Dispute alerts are how you do that. Ethoca (Mastercard) and Verifi (Visa, which operates RDR and CDRN) tell you when a cardholder complains to their bank. Refund inside that window and nobody files a dispute.

Our explainer on how chargeback alerts work covers the timing per network.

Alerts are one of three fixes, best done in this order:

  1. Set your Stripe statement descriptor to the brand customers bought from.
  2. Enable alerts on Ethoca, RDR, and CDRN, with auto-refund under a set amount.
  3. Add Stripe Radar rules to block high-risk scores and card-testing patterns.

Fix the descriptor first because it's free, and it prevents the complaint instead of catching it.

In Chargeback.io's Dropship.io case study, alerts cut that merchant's dispute rate from 0.93% to 0.16% in a quarter. That avoided an estimated $26,460 to $52,920 in Stripe fees.

Alerts miss some disputes. The match runs on the card number, and wallet payments through Stripe Link, Apple Pay, and Google Pay send a token instead, so the alert may never reach you. Some issuers also file with no alert, and those disputes still cost you $15.

Get chargeback alerts on your Stripe account and refund the complaint before Stripe charges you for it.

FAQ

Will Stripe refund the dispute fee if I win?

Stripe refunds the $15 dispute-countered fee when you win. Per Stripe's data, the original $15 dispute-received fee stays charged, so a won fight still costs you $15 in the US.

How much is the Stripe fee for $100?

A disputed $100 charge carries the same flat $15 US dispute fee as any other amount, based on Stripe's data. You also lose the $100 unless you win the dispute.

Can I get Stripe Chargeback Protection automatically?

Stripe decides eligibility per account and integration, so enrollment is Stripe's call rather than a setting you turn on. Ask Stripe support whether your account qualifies.

What happens if I ignore a Stripe dispute?

Ignoring a dispute means you lose it by default and forfeit the transaction amount plus the $15 US fee, as Stripe's data shows. You avoid the second $15 counter fee, since Stripe only charges that when you submit evidence and lose.
